What is DSL?

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

DSL is a technology that uses a standard copper two-wire pair (or line) to transmit high speed (high frequency) Internet connectivity to areas that will support the service.

How fast is DSL?

DSL can obtain speeds as high as 6.0Mbps. The speed your location can receive depends on your address, line quality and the distance to your local phone company's central office. A Central Office (CO) is the main switching station for the phone lines in your area. It is the office where the ILEC (your telephone company) connects the phone circuits, and makes the routes between local and long distance.

Can I get DSL in my area?

Check DSL availability at your location. DSL service can only be delivered within a radius from your phone company's local central office (CO). Typically, our highest speed service is restricted to a distance of no greater than 4,000 feet from the CO.

DSL type and speed availability depend on two primary factors:

  1. Your location's distance from the Central Office (CO)
  2. the type of lines used between you and the Central Office (fiber/copper)

There are things you need to know about DSL Service.

The speed of the DSL service is dependent on the length of the telephone line from the phone companies CO (central office) to your house.  This longer the distance the slower the DSL maximum speed you can get.  So there are locations which just can't get DSL.

For this reason every location must first be qualified for service, (see form below)

You can send a request to IHOT and we will qualify your location.

All Internet service providers follow the same rules.  If your location is over 14,000 feet from the CO, then the likely hood of getting DSL service is not good.  This limitation is not a IHOT imposed restriction but one that is a DSL limitation.

IHOT Business Class DSL service range from speeds of 1.5MB download up to 6.0MB downloads.  Upload speeds also varied from 384K upload to 768K uploads.

Traditional" Asymmetric DSL (ADSL)
Available up to 14,000 feet from a CO. Typically the download speed is faster than the upload speed. While ADSL can generally be installed up to 15,000 feet, this general rule does not guarantee that we will be able to install the circuit or that the circuit will perform at a reasonable level (see Terms of Service for more detail).

Speed, quality and availability is determined by both distance to CO and copper quality. Speeds expressed with ADSL packages are the maximum speeds your line may achieve. Although we will do everything within our power to provide you with the best possible service, due to the nature of the technology, ADSL services do not come with a service level guarantee (see Terms of Service for more detail). Since many businesses require a guaranteed service level agreement (SLA), ADSL is not available for business locations. Symmetric DSL (SDSL) is recommended for all eligible businesses.

Dedicated Line DSL
Dedicated Line DSL does not require phone service, but does require a phone line at the location for the DSL to run through. It requires a technician visit to connect the phone jack that will be used for DSL inside the premises with the local loop outside the premises.

IHOT Dedicated Line DSL is also known as Naked DSL, Dedicated Line DSL or 2nd Line DSL. IHOT Dedicated DSL is ideal for people who use cellular phones as their primary voice lines or want to replace their conventional phone service with feature-rich, cost-effective Voice over IP (VoIP) service. For Home/Home Office customers, IHOTY Dedicated Line DSL is typically delivered as an ADSL product, though the same technology can also be used to deliver business-level SDSL (Symmetric DSL) service.
